CHONGWE COUNCIL ATTAINS MUNICIPALITY STATUS MINISTER OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT, HONORABLE VINCENT MWALE MP HAS ESTABLISHED CHONGWE TOWN COUNCIL AS A MUNICIPAL COUNCIL. THIS IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH STATUTORY INSTRUMENT NUMBER 14 OF 2017 AND IN EXERCISE OF HIS POWERS CONTAINED UNDER SECTION THREE (3) OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT CAP 281 OF THE LAWS OF ZAMBIA. CHONGWE COUNCIL HAS BEEN OPERATING AS A DISTRICT COUNCIL SINCE ITS ESTABLISHMENT IN 1993. DURING THE OFFICIAL ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MUNICIPALITY HELD AT THE CIVIC CENTRE ON MONDAY 27TH FEBRUARY, 2017, MR. MWALE URGED CHONGWE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL NOT TO RELENT BUT ENDEAVOR TO PROVIDE IMPROVED SERVICE DELIVERY IN THE DISTRICT, TO THE ASPIRATIONS OF THE GOVERNMENT AND THE PEOPLE BEING SERVED. MR. MWALE NOTED THAT IN ITS MUNICIPALITY STATUS, IT IS ENVISAGED THAT CHONGWE DISTRICT WOULD FURTHER SEE A NUMBER OF INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES, WHICH WILL LATER BRING ABOUT MORE INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT, JOB CREATION AND IMPROVED LIVING STANDARDS IN THE DISTRICT, THEREBY COMPLIMENTING GOVERNMENT’S EFFORT IN THE DISTRICT. HE FURTHER NOTED THAT THE GOVERNMENT OF HIS EXCELLENCE THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA, MR. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU IDENTIFIES LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AS A KEY INSTRUMENT FOR GOVERNMENT TO DELIVER ITS OBJECTIVES. THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT MINISTER HAS SINCE CALLED ON ALL STAKEHOLDERS IN THE DISTRICT TO DOUBLE THEIR EFFORTS AND ATTRACT MORE INVESTMENTS, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE DISTRICTS PROXIMITY TO THE CAPITAL CITY WHICH POSITIONS IT IN BETTER STANDING AS A SATELLITE CITY. THE EVENT ALSO SAW THE INSTALLATION OF HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR OF CHONGWE, GEOFFREY CHUMBWE AND THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE MAYORS PARLOR BY THE MINISTER OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT. AND NEWLY INSTALLED MAYOR OF CHONGWE, HIS WORSHIP GEOFFREY CHUMBWE THANKED THE MINISTER OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT FOR ESTABLISHING CHONGWE AS A MUNICIPAL COUNCIL. MR. CHUMBWE HAS SINCE PLEDGED HIS TIRELESS COMMITMENT TO SERVING THE PEOPLE OF CHONGWE. SPEAKING EARLIER, HER ROYAL HIGHNESS SENIOR CHIEFTAINESS NKOMESHYA MUKAMAMBO II SAYS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF CHONGWE AS A MUNICIPAL COUNCIL WAS LONG OVERDUE, BEARING IN MIND THE MASSIVE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY GOVERNMENT, THE TRADITIONAL LEADERSHIP AND PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS. SHE HAS SINCE IMPLORED GOVERNMENT TO ACCELERATE THE COMPLETION OF INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS IN THE DISTRICT, SUCH AS ROADS, UNIVERSITIES AND SCHOOLS, AMONG OTHERS. END//

Chief  Matebo of the Kaonde speaking people of Kalumbila District says the imaginary wrangles in his Chiefdom are not being perpetuated by subjects of the royal establishment but by outside forces. Speaking shortly after having a closed door meeting with North Western Province Permanent Secretary Mr Willies Mangimela at provincial administration yesterday sitting Chief of the Matebo royal establishment Evans Nyeleti journalists that there are some chiefs trying to sponsor wrangles through hidden agendas in the Chiefdom. Subjects of Chief Matebo of the Kaonde speaking people of Kalumbila district have accused two traditional leaders for causing confusion in the matter of who should be the chief between Collece Mulemena and Evans Nyeleti. Speaking during a meeting called by the sitting Chief  of  the  Matebo chiefdom, the seventh Evans Nyeleti today at the palace, the subjects alleged that the said  two chiefs  are contributing to the continued  wrangles over the chieftainship  of the Matebo royal establishment. The subjects said the two chiefs are supporting Collece Mulemena who lost the case in the high Court through a judgment which was passed. Nyambi Harrison, who spoke on behalf of the other subjects, said he wonders why the two chiefs have concentrated on Chief Matebo's Chiefdom when they have their own Chiefdoms.
