September, 2017 --- The Zambia Weights and Measures
Agency has seized nine (09) illegal scales found being used for trade in
Chazanga and Chipata Townships of Lusaka.
This
is when a team of inspectors conducted a random inspection in butcheries in
those townships on Wednesday 20th
September 2017.
Of
eleven (11) trading premises inspected, eight (08) butcheries were found to be
using non-type-approved and unverified scales to sell meat products.
“The
illegal scales were seized, and the owners have been summoned to the Agency for
cautioning and corrective action.”
The
Agency is cautioning butchery owners and other traders against using instruments
that have not been type-approved and verified by the Zambia Weights and
Measures Agency.
It
is illegal to possess or use an instrument for trading purposes that is not type
approved and verified for accuracy by the Zambia Weights and Measures Agency.
Further,
the Agency has noted increased importation and use of non-type-approved digital
scales from China by Zambian traders.
“Traders
should be careful with cheap models of scales they try to use in their business
as many of them are not suitable for use in trade.”
“Scales
and measuring instruments must be checked and verified by the Zambia Weights
and Measures Agency before being used for business or trade.”
“Not
all digital scales can be used in trade. The Agency shall not allow
non-type-approved instruments to be used for trade so as to protect consumers
from being cheated and support businesses from incurring losses.”
Traders
are advised to buy genuine and type approved trade scales from distributors
certified by the Zambia Weights and Measures Agency.
