Government says the debt which the country has incurred is for the benefit of the peoplet hrough investments made in capital projects across the country and not for consumption.
Speaking during the commemoration of National Day of Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation held at Solwezi Central Seventh Day Adventist Church North Western Provincial Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu said government has been borrowing in order to invest in capital programs that are going to facilitate improved of livelihoods of its people.
He says government has incurred debt because it has been investing in various sectors of the economy to improve the living standards of the people.
‘’I know lately, people have been talking about Zambian debt. Zambian debt has become topical but the debt is a debt that was incurred not for consumption. It was debt that was incurred in order to invest in capital programs that are going to facilitate improvement of livelihoods of our people.’’ Honorable Mubukwanu said.
‘’if we did not borrow to build the Solwezi-Chingola road, it would still be a nightmare to travel from Solwezi and the rest of the country.’’ He added.
Honorable Mubukwanu said even with the abundant rains, loadsheding will not come to an end because the generation capacity which the country has is inadequate.
He has observed that there is not been consistent or significant investment in the generation capacity of Zesco for a long time which prompted government to borrow in the project.
Honorable Mubukwanu has assured the people of north western province that the debt which the country has incurred in order to improve the environment that is required for business to thrive.
He said for an investor looks at a number of factors before making an investment in any country.
‘’ when investors come into the country, some of the things they look at is the availability of good road network, do you have communication network, do you have enough power capacity in the country, so if you don’t have those you cannot expect the economy to grow.’’ he said.
And the provincial minister has challenged the people of Zambia to take interest in current affairs of other countries.
He said what is happening in the country is not only unique here but also in other countries.
‘’all the economies of the world have seen a reduction of minus four percent. It is not out of order if we commit our country to God considering what we are going through’’ Hon Mubukwanu told the congregation.
Honorable Mubukwanu said Christians across the country should continue praying for the leaders of the country for wisdom and a better Zambia.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Minister says government desires to see the oneness that is exhibited by the church be translated into the political sphere.
He says some politicians have tendency of sowing a seed of disunity amongst the people of Zambia, adding that such should be condemned.
‘’unity has become part of DNA as people of Zambia. Politicians, probably some politicians are the only ones that are trying to sow a seed of disunity amongst our people and this must not be allowed and this must be condemned. Politics is only but a means of service.’’ He said.
‘’it is a calling through which we are rendering our selfless service to our country. For in politics we must compete for ideologies and not for physical strength’’ hon Mubukwanu said.
He further said that if politicians are not going to tame their tongues, then they risk undermining the unity that the country has enjoyed for the past 56 years of independence.
‘’someone from the SDA Church can walk side by side with someone from the UCZ church and share a social moment together without fighting but why should someone from the UPND and PF fail to walk together side by side and share social moments together?’’ the Provincial Minister said.
This year’s commemoration of National Day of Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation has been held under the theme; Zambia seeks intervention for sustained national unity, peace and prosperity (Isaiah 43:2-3, 3 John 2,2 chronicles 7 :14)
