BAN OF IMPORTATION OF VEGES, FRUITS NO DIFFERENCE FROM XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS-FARMERS.
Farmers in central province have welcomed the proposal by government to ban the importation of vegetables and fruits with mixed feelings.
Jonathan Muchindu a small holder farmer in mapaza chiefdom on behalf of the other farmers told farmers prime newspaper that Zambian farmers are not capable to supply fruits and vegetables to companies like Shoprite and food lovers.
Mr. Muchindu stated that government was supposed to test the market before arriving on such a decision.
He added that such a decision is another form of discrimination which can be likened to xenophobia in the trade industrial.
‘’there is no difference between the ban of the importation of fruits and vegies to that of xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa’’ Mr. Muchindu
Mr. Muchindu also mentioned that this may lead to other countries putting up similar bans on the products that country exports to other countries.
He has however, called on the farmers in the country to brass themselves in entering into competitions of producing more products for the market is largely available.
Meanwhile Jackson Lungu, a small holder farmer said the ban of the importation of vegetables and fruits is a welcome move.
Mr. Lungu stated that the ban will encourage farmers to venture into growing of vegetables and fruits in large quantities, which in turn will sale to  companies such as Shoprite.
