The Drug Enforcement Commission through its Anti-Money Laundering Investigations Unit (AMLIU) in Lusaka has arrested and jointly charged two (02) Business persons for money laundering activities involving over K200 thousand.
DEC public relations officer theresa katongo has disclosed that Webster Shamyombwe, 46, a Businessman of House No. 961 Kamwala South in Lusaka has been arrested and jointly charged with Besnati Tembo, 37, a Business Woman of the same abode for obtaining money by false pretences and money laundering contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
Particulars of the offence are that Webster Shamyombwe on dates unknown but between 1st May 2015 and 31st December, 2015 jointly and whilst acting together with Besnart Tembo and other persons unknown did falsely obtain money amounting to K276, 500.00 from a named Director of Sanani Trading in Lusaka by falsely purporting that the said amount was 1% of the performance security guarantee for the printing and supply of campaign materials for a named political party for the 2015 general elections when in fact not.
Further, Webster Shamyombwe did engage directly or indirectly in money laundering activities involving K276, 500.00 where a Toyota Land Cruiser has been seized as part of money laundering proceeds of crime.
The two suspects are on Police Bond and will appear in court soon.
And on 21st February, 2017 the Commission in Eastern Province arrested Dennis Mwanza, 46, a Truck Driver of House No. E27 Kabangwe area in Chibombo District for trafficking in 1.650 tonnes of loose cannabis.
The suspect appeared in the Nyimba Subordinate Court on 22nd February, 2017 before Hon. Magistrate Webby C. Chanda and was sentenced to five (05) years in imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the same date.
The Court further ruled that seized items in the matter which include a Volvo FL Truck Registration No. ACZ 8394, a Toyota Regius Bus Registration No. ACB 673 and household goods will be forfeited to the state within thirty (30) days if no claim to the said property is made.
