Solwezi District Farmers association Applauds Government for an increase in the floor price of a 50kg bag of Maize .
Solwezi district farmer’s association chairperson Merian Kalala has applauded government through the ministry of agriculture for the increment in the flow price of maize.
Speaking in an interview with Solwezi FCC radio news today MS Kalala says the increase in the floor price of maize will help farmers considering their costs incurred during the production of the commodity.
She says the K110 flow price for the 2018/2019 marketing season is better than the previous k75.00
However, Ms. Kalala says as an association they expected more because the production of maize in Zambia at the moment is expensive.
She says some farmers buy their own farm inputs at exorbitant prices and them selling a 50kg bag of maize at K110 means a loss to them.
MS Kalala further says in future, there is need of farmers to sale their produce collectively through a cooperative than as individual.
She says this will help them to speak one voice thereby having value for their produce.
Ms. Kalala has sympathized with farmers who have opted to sale their produce to briefcase buyers who intern has exploited them.
